DENTAL BIOCOMPATIBILITY |
At our family practice, we believe that the condition of your mouth affects the state of health in your entire body. For the past 30 years, we have been providing patients with viable, biocompatible treatment options.
|
What is Biocompatibility?
Biocompatibility refers to the types of materials placed
in your mouth during a dental procedure. Biocompatible
materials will be as neutral as possible, and NOT cause
adverse allergic reactions or negative responses from
your immune system. We are able to test different materials
to find which ones are most agreeable (i.e. biocompatible)
with your body.

|
Biocompatibility does not mean that we sacrifice any of the cosmetic or quality elements in dental procedures. In fact,
just the opposite is true. The beauty and strength of bonded porcelain has long been recognized as a superior material for dental restorations.
|
Ideally a biocompatible material does NOT cause:
irritation
inflammation
foreign body response
allergic reaction
cancer

|
Biocompatible materials are those which are as neutral as possible when used in a dental procedure.
Considering everyone is unique, some individuals will be more compatible than others with certain types of materials used in dental treatments and procedures.
For example, there are hundreds of different types of composite resins and porcelain/ceramic materials used for fillings, onlays, inlays, and crowns.
Bonded porcelain/ceramic materials are the most biocompatible, durable, and aesthetic dental material available today. Most of our fillings, onlays, inlays, and crowns are fabricated from a porcelain/ceramic material that is milled and then properly bonded into place.
The focus of our practice is to make as many biocompatible options available to our patients.
In cases where patients have compromised immune systems (such as multiple chemical sensitivity [MCS]), we are concerned about achieving the highest level of biocompatibility.
With these cases of MCS, we strongly suggest that extensive biocompatibility testing be done, and offer referrals to practitioners who conduct specialized testing.
