DRILL~LESS DENTISTRY |
Air Abrasion is a new technology that can replace conventional dental drilling in many situations. |
| Air Abrasion, also known as micro-abrasion or
"drill-less dentistry", employs a kinetic energy
principle where particles blast decay away. Air
Abrasion technology functions much like sandblasting
by blowing an air stream of tiny particles onto the tooth
structure. The procedure can remove tooth structure
without the noise, vibration or pain felt with the drill. |

Air Abrasion can be used without anesthetics!
In most cases it is possible to use the Air Abrasion system without anesthetic so patients can avoid anesthetic injections (i.e. freezing). Air Abrasion can be used effectively to repair cracks, discolorations and prepare tooth surfaces for bonding procedures.
Once decay has been removed, the tooth can be restored with composite resins or "white fillings." Compared to drilling, the air abrasion process is quieter, and eliminates much of the discomfort of a conventional drill.
Advantages to combining Air Abrasion & Diagnodent.
Diagnodent, a LASER tool for early decay detection, combined with Air Abrasion allows us to treat tooth decay at a much earlier stage. Early detection means smaller fillings that are less susceptible to wear, can last longer, and leave more of the tooth intact. Furthermore, the chair time for the patient is usually shorter.
Comfort is another aspect of the Air Abrasion system that many patients appreciate, especially when an anesthetic injection (i.e. freezing) is not required. This is a major benefit for pregnant or medically compromised patients. However, Air Abrasion can't be used as an alternative in every dental procedure. During an examination, we will evaluate if Air Abrasion can be utilized.
